Gabions and Reno Mattresses
Gabion Baskets are rock filled wire boxes that provide stabilization and structure for many construction applications.
Most gabions are filled on site with rocks, sand, or concrete aggregate mix. The boxes are then stacked, interlocked, and tied back to form a structure that will prevent natural erosion from occurring.

Gabion Basket Applications:
- Retaining walls
- Erosion control
- Coastal protection
- Check dams
- Military applications
- Beach restorations
- Architectural applications

Retention Pond Design
In Virginia Beach, Virginia gabion baskets were applied as forebays in a large retention pond. Learn more about the construction project and why gabions were incorporated into the design.
What Are Gabions Made Of?
Gabions are typically made from galvanized steel wire mesh. The wire mesh creates a box-like structure with internal cells.
Our gabions are manufactured from double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh. This wire meets ASTM A975. The galvanized wire mesh is used for Galvanized Gabions, PoliMac™ Coated Gabions as well as Reno Mattresses.
Galvanized Gabions and Reno Mattresses can also be PoliMac™ coated. This coating protects the wire from corrosive elements like salt water and acidic soils.
Installing Gabion Baskets
Gabion Baskets and Reno Mattresses are fastened together with Hog Rings. You can choose from either Galvanized Hog Rings or Stainless Steel Hog Rings.
Common Gabion Sizes:
L x W x H (ft) | Number of Cells |
---|---|
6′ x 3′ x 1′ | 2 |
6′ x 3′ x 1.5′ | 2 |
6′ x 3′ x 3′ | 2 |
9′ x 3′ x 1′ | 3 |
9′ x 3′ x 1.5′ | 3 |
9′ x 3′ x 3′ | 3 |
12′ x 3′ x 1′ | 4 |
12′ x 3′ x 1.5′ | 4 |
12′ x 3′ x 3′ | 4 |
Reno Mattress
A Reno Mattress is very similar to a gabion basket. Both structures are made of double twisted wire mesh that creates cage-like containers. Just like gabions, the Reno Mattress is filled with rock and stone on site.
The main difference between a Reno Mattress and a gabion basket is the product’s size. The Mattress is rectangular and only up to 12″ tall. The product’s size and shape make it ideal for channel lining and river bank protection.
Common Reno Mattress Sizes
