About the Project

The Sandbridge Road Nimmo Parkway Phase VII-A project is part of a multi-phased project to improve access to Sandbridge Beach in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Sandbridge Road is the only accessible road in and out of the beach community which poses multiple challenges for residents, visitors and emergency services. The narrow two-lane roadway has multiple sharp curves, no shoulder, and has a history of flooding from rain, wind, tides and storms. In the last decade, improvements have been made to improve flood concerns, including constructing a new bridge over Hell’s Point Creek.

During Phase VII-A, Branscome made multiple improvements to a multi-mile stretch of Sandbridge Road including road realignment, raising the roadway elevation, adding an on-road bike lane and a 10-foot shared use path.

Raising the Roadway

The new roadway was constructed in an a coastal zone with soft and heavily saturated soil which required significant geosynthetic reinforcement.

A layer of 8.0 oz VDOT Approved Subgrade Stabilization Fabric was installed as a base layer beneath the geogrid in order to provide separation, stabilization, and prevent fines from migrating through the geogrid’s apertures. The nonwoven geotextile fabric also helps maintain long-term separation and drainage by preventing the sand and underlying subgrade from mixing which is significant in an area with a high water table.

3D-HT Geogrid was selected as an alternate to TX-160 to provide three-dimensional high-strength support over a very soft subgrade.

An additional layer of 8.0 oz. nonwoven geotextile fabric was installed below the sand lift to provide a separation layer between the stone and sand.
