About the Project

The neighborhood around Greenford Drive in Richmond, Virginia’s west end was built in the late 1950s and ’60s. The neighborhood’s original stormwater infrastructure was aging and required upgrading to fix deterioration problems.

The stormwater improvement project included removing the corroding corrugated metal pipe (CMP) and replacing it with 60-inch steel-reinforced polyethylene (SRPE) pipe.

On the north side of Greenford Drive, a double run of 60-inch SRPE connected to an existing headwall. A single run of 60-inch SRPE connected to an existing headwall on the south side.

Additional area improvements included replacing the manhole sewer and water lines.

This was the first time I used the Kanaflex pipe. I found the product was easy to use and allowed us to proceed through several tricky areas and rough conditions; we had a lot of other utilities we had to work around, and the light weight of the product allowed us to do that.”

Why Value Engineer SRPE Pipe in lieu of RCP?

Lightweight

60-inch SRPE pipe weighs 51.1 lbs/ft compared to 1,300 lb/ft RCP, making it easier to transport, handle and install on site.

Safer Installations

Unlike RCP, SRPE pipe doesn’t require heavy machinery to lift or install the pipe, reducing the risk of on site heavy machinery accidents.

Superior Joint Performance

SRPE has a deep insertion bell & spigot gasketed joint tested to 20 psi, resulting in a high performance, watertight joint that far exceeds the ASTM D3212 minimum allowable leakage of 10.8 psi for sanitary sewers.
