About the Project

The 68th Street Dump encompasses a 239-acre area and encompasses multiple landfills. After accepting industrial and commercial waste for years, the site was designated as a Superfund site, necessitating a comprehensive remediation strategy.

GEOWEB® for Landfill Cap

The 68th Street Landfill required a 12-inch lift of soil to cap the entire site. It can be difficult to hold that volume of capped soil in place on long, steep slopes like those at 68th Street where all slopes were steeper than 3:1.

12-inch GEOWEB® geocell is designed to handle that soil volume while maintaining structural stability which is why it was GEOWEB® was perfect solution for this landfill cap.

51,000 square feet of the landfill was capped with GEOWEB® GW30V 12-inch depth geocells, connected with ATRA Keys and infilled with topsoil and vegetation. The soil stabilization system is anchored with tendons and a buried deadman at the crest.

GW30V12 was the perfect solution to the site because it isolated the hazardous material, ensured compliance with the EPA’s 12-inches of cover requirement, successfully managed the steep and complex topography, and provided a durable solution that could provide lasting erosion protection against environmental conditions.

Benefits of GEOWEB® for Landfill Caps

3D system stabilizes the steep slopes, preventing erosion.

Pre-assembly and ATRA® systems improves installation and connection.

Topsoil filled cells create environment for sustained vegetation, improving aesthetic and ecological value.
