About the Project

The Sunset Cove Marina was redeveloped into BluFin Bungalows and Marina, a waterfront accommodation in the heart of Chincoteague Island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The 5-acre waterfront property is situated on the Chincoteague Channel and features boat slips, waterfront bungalows and even floating bungalow boats.

The pre-existing property operated as a marina since 1961 before selling in 2022 to a development company. As part of the redevelopment plan, the marina’s structures were replaced by 12 bungalows, a pool, bath house, and parking to accommodate guests and boaters.

GEOPAVE® Aggregate Paver

GEOPAVE was specified as the permeable pavement BMP for the redevelopment project. The aggregate-filled system functions as the site’s stormwater management system.
The design specified a base consisting of aggregate stone, nonwoven geotextile fabric, and an aggregate bedding layer. A sand filter was also required below the aggregate stone reservoir in areas that required increased elevation. The stone base improves GEOPAVE’s stormwater storage capacity and allows the system to function as the retention/detention basin.
GEOPAVE gravel pavers were connected with U-Clips, filled with crushed aggregate No. 8 stone and open graded. White Snap Delineators were added to the system to delineate parking spaces.

Optimal Load Transfer

Shared walls, strong connecting clips and an integral mesh bottom creates a strong system that resists breakage and stress from vehicle turning.

Aggregate Containment

The mesh bottom and 2-inch walls contain aggregate and prevents the lifting effect from granular fill downward migration.

Stormwater Storage

Stormwater naturally infiltrates through the stone-filled cells, meeting stormwater management requirements while reducing runoff.
